Insurance Guide
Whilst we're sure you will do everything you can to ensure your caravan does not get damaged, unfortunately incidents beyond your control can happen. Caravan repairs can often cost thousands of pounds, even for damage that may seem minor. Much like motor insurance, many repairs can be labour-intensive with many man hours required, resulting in a hefty invoice once complete. Insuring your caravan will give you that extra piece of mind so you know that, should the worst happen, we'll be here for you.
Here are a couple of suggestions to protect your van and choose the right insurance policy:-
- Make sure you know exactly what your insurer is covering for you. Whilst the primary concern is always to insure the caravan itself, items like awnings, security devices, televisions, bed linen and motor movers all need to be insured as well. To keep things as simple and clear as possible for you, we insure your caravan, awning, your equipment and your contents all under individual sections so you know exactly what you are covered for. Please bear in mind that the contents of your caravan could be covered under your home insurance; its well worth checking before you pay for the same cover twice!
- Understand the differences between a ‘New for Old' policy and an ‘Indemnity' policy. Insuring New for Old means you need to make sure your caravan is insured for the cost to replace with a brand new equivalent from the manufacturer. Insuring on an Indemnity basis, or ‘Market Value' basis as it is often referred to, means you are insuring your van for its current value on the open market.
- Using security devices on your caravan not only ensures your van is more protected, but it can also mean a cheaper insurance premium. Under our own policies, the use of at least one wheel clamp or axle wheel lock system is mandatory. You should ensure that your wheel clamp covers at least one of the wheel nuts and part of the surrounding tyre to offer maximum protection against would-be thieves. Using multiple wheel clamps, hitch locks, alarms and even tracking devices for extra security and peace of mind can mean you earn additional discounts that reduce your insurance premiums too, a win-win!
- Give great care and consideration to where you choose to store your caravan when you are not using it. If you have room, storing at your home address is easy, convenient and one of the safest way to store your van. If you don't have the space at home, there are many specialist caravan storage compounds that will accommodate you. Be sure you check whether they have suffered fires/break-ins in the past, what kind of security presence they have and whether or not they are a member of the Caravan Storage Site Owners' Association (CaSSOA), which again can all affect the premium offered. Try to avoid storing your caravan at commercial premises or on the roadside/car park as insurers will almost always decline to offer theft cover in these instances.
Understanding the boundaries between motor and caravan insurance
Should you be unfortunate enough to suffer an accident on the road whilst your caravan is attached to your towing vehicle, your motor policy should cover you for any third party property damage, should you be proven to be negligent. However, your motor policy will not pick up any damage to the caravan itself, which is is where your touring caravan policy will kick in. If the accident was not your fault, you may well be able to claim directly from the third party motor insurer who insures the vehicle deemed at-fault, which would prevent you having to record a claim against your own policy and pay any policy excesses.
Crucially, liability cover under a touring caravan insurance policy will only be active when the caravan becomes detached from a towing vehicle. Until this point, your motor insurer should protect you.
Common Questions
These are just a few examples of the questions we commonly get asked about our Touring Caravan policy, however if there is anything we have not covered then please don't hesitate to contact us.
How long will you cover my caravan New for Old?
Whilst we previously only allowed New for Old cover for the first 5 years, we have now extended this to allow this cover for caravans up to 10 years old. After this time, we will happily continue to cover your caravan for its current market value as long as it remains in a good state of repair.
What should I do if I need to claim?
Should something happen that may mean you need to make a claim under your policy, you should contact us a soon as possible and provide full details of what has happened, when it happened and what losses/damages you wish to claim for. At this point your claim will be referred to a specialist claims handling team who will correspond directly with you going forward, ensuring everything progresses as smoothly and quickly as possible.
Do you cover Awnings and their contents?
Yes, our touring caravan policy does include cover for awnings, provided you have requested this and let us know how much cover you need. If you have selected contents insurance, this cover does also extend to insure contents kept inside the awning as well, but only whilst the caravan is in use.
Where will my caravan be insured?
This will depend on what type of cover you have requested, which is based on your use of the caravan, which should fall under one of the following:-
- If you normally tow your caravan on the road we will ask you to provide details of the caravan's regular storage address. Your van will then be insured whilst not In Use at that address only. Otherwise, your caravan will be insured whilst In Use anywhere in the UK, and optionally Europe.
- If your caravan is seasonally sited on a licensed caravan site pitch your caravan will be insured whilst it is kept on its seasonal pitch between the dates you provide us with when taking out your policy. During these dates, this is the only location your caravan will be insured. Outside of the season, your caravan will be insured at the storage address you provide us with.
- If your caravan is permanently sited on a licensed caravan site pitch your caravan will be covered whilst it is on the permanent pitch at the address you provide when taking out your policy. It's important to note that with this type of cover, your caravan will not be insured for towing use and will not be covered at any other location.
Please note you must always keep your declared security devices activated when your caravan is detached from the towing vehicle to safeguard against loss.
Can I cancel my policy?
You are entitled to cancel your Policy within the 14 day cooling off period, under which circumstances you will receive a full refund of the premium you have paid, less any administration fees charged for arranging and cancelling your Insurance. After this period, you are able to cancel your Policy and you will receive a refund of premium, less a proportionate deduction for the time you have been on cover and any administration charges. We will also deduct the value of our clawed back commission.
